1 FIND T-SHAPED TEAM MEMBERS
A T-shaped team member is someone with a deep level understanding in one specific area and a general understanding of other areas in the business. Such a team member will be able to collaborate across disciplines with experts in other areas and apply knowledge in areas of expertise other than one’s own.
2 AVOID HIRING FRIENDS AND FAMILY
It is very difficult to distinguish between professional and personal life. If you hire your friends and family it can make your life more difficult.
3 DON’T OUTSOURCE KEY ROLES
If you have an edge in the competitive market it’s important not to outsource your core competency
It is important to first hire those people who have the key skills you require to make your startup work. Do not outsource that.
4 AVOID HIRING FAT-CATS FIRST
Fat-cats are people who are very experienced and have been in the industry for 20 or 30 years. These people will probably be good managers but you need people who will be hands on in the beginning.
You have to hire people who are smart and will get things done themselves.
5 HIRE A-PLAYERS ONLY
A-Players are people who will get things done. Do not hire B-Players just because you have to fill a position. What will end up happening is that the A-Players will not like to work with B-Players. And the B-Players will end up hiring C-Players.
Try to stick to this rule as strictly as possible.
6 HIRE PEOPLE WHO ARE HANDS ON, CAN DO, SELF-STARTER AND HAS A SPEEDY APPROACH
Try to find those people who are hands on and have the attitude that they can make it happen. And they should be self-starters. And most importantly, a startup has one real strong competitive advantage that you should never give away, and that is speed. Your flexibility to create a product or service on the fly and adapt to the necessities of the market extremely fast. So use that for your advantage.
7 CREATE COMPANY CULTURE
Don’t assume that the companies culture will create itself. So create your culture actively and live it.
8 EMPOWER YOUR MANAGERS
Have daily or weekly meetings with your managers and make sure to involve them in your decision making processes. Empowerment is key to success.
9 HIRE AND FIRE RIGHT
It can be really easy to hire someone if you find good people but firing right is as important as well. If you have someone who does not perform or is not up to your standards in the company do not keep them for too long.
10 ALWAYS BE HIRING
Make sure that you are ready to hire as soon as you find someone who will really add value to your company.
