Gary Vaynerchuk needs no introduction. He is one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the social media and marketing space. This book contains several questions from entrepreneurs and Gary’s take on them. The answers are taken from his online show named #AskGaryVee Show. The book is released on 2016 and hence the content is so fresh that it can be directly applied to your business.

In this article we are going to focus on content marketing.

We will go through 8 important points related to content marketing that Gary mentioned in this book.

1 THINK LIKE A MEDIA COMPANY

All businesses should think like a media company. Even if you are a single person company (a Solopreneur) or a big company with thousands of employees you need to still think like media companies while making content.

You have to start talking. Talk about your products, talk about your competitors, talk about what goes with wine, why we drink wine, why New Zealand grows great wine grapes, what to eat with wine, talk about New Zealand, talk with passion, confidence and expertise. Become bigger than you are!

You know how Nat Geo and HBO makes entertaining TV shows? You do not have to be a rich media company to produce shows anymore. Because of platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and other social media apps and websites you have the power to get a massive audience for your show without being on TV.

2 PUT OUT CONTENT EVERYDAY

If you are not producing content you don’t exist.

Companies like Red Bull and GoPro makes a lot of content. That’s how they became so big.

It’s hard to put out content everyday but you have to. It’s even harder when you have high standards but you have got to try.

If you put out content only once a week you will not be able to win in this game.

How to grow a following from nothing? Put out quality content everyday and engage around it. When you are first starting out usually you are directly responsible for making your brands content. Once you have a team you have to teach them to make content by osmosis, teach them to think like you.

Since you are directly responsible for your brands content when you are first starting out you will have to know your strength. It can be illustration, cartoon, article, vlog, podcast, curated content .etc.

3 LEARN HOW TO STORYTELL

Storytelling can be used to make a boring product or industry interesting.

You have to stop doing the same crap that people in your industry are doing over and over again. Start getting innovative. Look for inspiration from what people are doing outside your industry.

4 JAB JAB JAB RIGHT HOOK

You have to give before you ask. You have to give value several times before you ask for a sale.

You cannot just walk into a boxing ring, right hook and leave.

This is what is known as “Jab jab jab, right hook”. In reality you might want to give value several dozen times before you ask for something from your audience. This is also a cardinal rule in sales – Don’t close too early.

If you are working on a prototype that is 6 months away just put out a lot of content and engage with your audience. This is how you jab. And once the product is released just right hook.

Lastly, also know that when it’s time to make a sale just right hook. Don’t try to make your right hook appear like a jab. This is what 90% marketers are doing. Just tell your audience that you have a product to sell and if you followed the recipe correctly you should be getting a lot of sales.

5 GO NATIVE

Every social media platform has a native form of showing content to its users. Mold your content so that it feels native to the platform. Don’t just start posting links on all platforms as it will just destroy your viewers user experience.

6 GO DEEP

Keep watch of people’s attention graph when you are marketing. The more you practice and analyze results as you go, the better you will get. You have to be really smart and adapt.

Good content should rarely be about what you want, it’s about what your audience wants.

You have to go deep!

7 GO IN EARLY

Take advantage of platforms that no one is using yet.

For example, you should try using Facebook ads because the era is similar to Google Adwords back in early 2000. You should try Facebook dark posts.  

Also note that influencer marketing will be the advertising bedrock of the next decade. Anybody with a public social profile can be an influencer as well. By 2020 small businesses will be reaching out to local celebrities, local means neighborhood moms with 369 Instagram followers. It works because people like to buy from people they trust

8 HAVE STRICT DEADLINES

Having a strict headline will help you to work extremely fast.

How many times were you absolutely sure that you were going to miss a deadline but you miraculously pulled it off? You will be able to work very efficiently if you set a deadline. You have to force yourself.
